Understanding the Challenge

Among Muslim-American undergraduate students, 46% report drinking alcohol, and 25% report using illicit drugs (Ahmed, Abu-Ras, & Arfken, 2014). A separate national survey found that 14% of Muslim Americans reported binge drinking (Gallup Muslim West Facts Project, 2009).

In a survey of U.S. imams addressing the counseling needs of their congregants, the majority reported counseling on issues such as anxiety, depression, financial burdens, and discrimination related to Islamophobia. Notably, 41% of imams reported counseling on substance use disorders (SUD), though the specifics of these interventions were not thoroughly detailed (O. M. Ali et al., 2005).

These statistics highlight the significant need for culturally sensitive support and resources within the Muslim community to address addiction and mental health challenges.

Case Study

Substance abuse and alcoholism are increasing within Canada’s Muslim communities. Muslim organizations in Canada are working to raise awareness about these issues. According to Penny Canada, 20% of Canadian Muslims are at risk of addiction-related mental health challenges and alcoholism. Despite the growing need, Muslims are less likely to use mental health services due to stigma and cultural barriers. The Canadian Muslim population more than doubled from 2001 to 2021, increasing the need for support services.

Systemic Approach

A.L.I. not only focuses on the individual but also addresses the broader systems that foster these behaviors. By understanding the social, economic, and cultural factors contributing to addiction, we aim to provide families with a comprehensive perspective, encouraging them to see beyond individual blame and towards systemic solutions.

Barriers to Treatment

Muslims face unique challenges in accessing substance abuse treatment. These include the stigma of addiction, fear of social repercussions, and lack of culturally sensitive treatment options. Studies have found that Muslim patients, especially women, often seek care where they will not be seen by others in their community, highlighting the need for confidential and culturally appropriate services.
